Covid-19 (March 19): 22,341 new cases, 85 new deaths

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry said 22,341 new daily Covid-19 cases were reported yesterday, bringing the total cumulative cases to 3,974,019.

Active cases currently stood at 283,276, down eight percent compared to 14 days ago.

New cases according to states are as follows:

Negeri Sembilan (1,405)

Perak (1,403)

Kedah (1,353)

Johor (1,286)

Sarawak (1,177)

Pahang (1,009)

Malacca (639)

Another 85 deaths attributed to Covid-19 were reported yesterday, of which 23 were declared as 'brought in dead'.

Over the past week, an average of 87 people were reported to have died of Covid-19, while the average for the past 30 days was 69.6, indicating that Covid-19 deaths are on the uptrend.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, a total of 34,329 deaths have been attributed to Covid-19.

There have been 1580 reported Covid-19 deaths this month. For comparison, there were 771 deaths last month and 491 deaths in January.

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 1,038 deaths per one million population, and fourth-worst in Asia after Iran, Lebanon and Jordan – all in the Middle East.

The state with the highest deaths was Johor (18) followed by Perak (17), Selangor (15), Kedah (10), Penang (5), Malacca (4), Pahang (4), Kelantan (3), Kuala Lumpur (3), Sabah (2), Sarawak (2), Terengganu (1) and Putrajaya (1).

There are 7,164 Covid-19 patients who are hospitalised of which 390 are in intensive care.
