Covid-19 (March 20): 19,105 new cases, 71 deaths

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry said 19,105 new daily Covid-19 cases were reported yesterday, bringing the total cumulative cases to 3,993,124.

Active cases currently stood at 274,060, down 9.9 percent compared to 14 days ago.

New cases according to the states are as follows:

Selangor (6,761)

Penang (1,772)

Kuala Lumpur (1,659)

Johor (1,441)

Perak (1,300)

Kedah (1,113)

Pahang (1,100)

Negeri Sembilan (885)

Sarawak (852)

Terengganu (547)

Kelantan (518)

Another 71 deaths attributed to Covid-19 were reported yesterday, of which 26 were declared as 'brought in dead'.

Over the past week, an average of 84.7 people were reported to have died of Covid-19, while the average for the past 30 days was 70.8, indicating that Covid-19 deaths are on the uptrend.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, a total of 34,400 deaths have been attributed to Covid-19.

There have been 1,651 reported Covid-19 deaths this month. For comparison, there were 771 deaths last month and 491 deaths in January.

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions, with 1,040 deaths per 1 million population, and fourth-worst in Asia after Iran, Lebanon and Jordan – all in the Middle East.  

The state with the highest deaths were Kedah (14) and Perak (14) followed by Johor (11), Selangor (7), Kelantan (5), Penang (5), Sarawak (5), Negeri Sembilan (4), Terengganu (2), Kuala Lumpur (2), Malacca (1) and Pahang (1), .

There are 7,080 Covid-19 patients who are hospitalised, of whom 371 are in intensive care.
