YOURSAY | Khairy’s daunting task in Sungai Buloh

YOURSAY | ‘Umno is a party for rural areas and not an urban one.’

KJ anxious about contesting 'pitch-black' Sungai Buloh

Man on the Silver Mountain: When health minister Khairy Jamaluddin referred to Sungai Buloh as ‘pitch-black’, I hoped it was not an innuendo to his probable Pakatan Harapan opponent because that would be racist.

Well, now that you are in the hot seat, you realise that you are fair game, aren’t you? Critics will likely take no prisoners. Khairy, perhaps Sungai Buloh voters want to refer to your tenure as the sports minister where RM100 million was allegedly unaccounted for.

You were then the former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s son-in-law, a very privileged advantage for you. Of course, any father-in-law will take his son-in-law anytime. It is in the family. Good for you, of course.

Nevertheless, you have to answer to that RM100 million before you expect any voter to put a cross beside your name. How about it?

Arjun: Khairy was one of those young politicians in Umno from whom much may have been expected to right the ills of the party.

Despite his long stay with Umno, Khairy seems to have made no serious contribution to the party’s revival, nor did he demonstrate any need for the party to adopt a strong moral outrage against corruption.

The moral imperatives for responsible leadership, especially in Umno, could have been a preoccupation for the well-educated young.

He, however, did endear himself to many Malaysians with his demonstration of effectiveness in our national vaccination programme. Best wishes.

5impleMind: All of Khairy's credentials mean nothing when they are not put to good use. Fugitive businessperson Low Taek Jho or Jho Low has brains, too, but...

Khairy chose Umno and he chose to stick to Umno. He chose to turn a blind eye when he was a part of the government that destroyed the country.

He had all the time before an election to quit and stand up for what is right. He didn't.

Khairy simply couldn't let go of the forbidden fruits that come with kleptocracy. They were delicious. He watched his government catch the small fires of corruption but ignored the sharks that he swam alongside.

Those who choose to eat ‘ikan masin’ (dried fish), especially in abundance, must endure thirst. I have no sympathy for him.

Guglu: It will be a big loss to all Malaysians if we lose the best and the most competent minister from BN. Khairy is highly educated, urbane and suave.

He is always at ease whether delivering a speech in front of an international audience or ordinary kampong folks. The fact that he felt anxious about contesting in Sungai Buloh is understandable.

Sungai Buloh used to be a poor and crime-ridden area. At one time, both Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya districts refused to take Sungai Buloh as part of their respective districts due to its ‘reputation’. In the end, Shah Alam was forced to incorporate Sungai Buloh.

Though Sungai Buloh it is well developed now, its legacy lingers especially with PKR’s Sivarasa Rasiah as the former MP.

Sadly, Umno has thrown Khairy to the lions. But with a candidate like Khairy, even the lions could be tamed.

USA_Statue of Liberty: PKR has technically thrown its deputy information chief R Ramanan under the bus by fielding him at Sungai Buloh despite the large majority won by Sivarasa at the 14th general election.

Those who supported Sivarasa in the last general election shouldn't bother themselves this time by voting, and send a crystal-clear message to PKR that they don't want to get fooled this time.

The same message should be sent to DAP after the dropping former Klang MP Charles Santiago as candidate for unfathomable reasons.

IndigoSwan6963: Sungai Buloh residents must understand that to be part of the solutions to the ills that plague the country due to racial and religious divides, corruption, and intolerance, all must unite under one voice to vote for Harapan.

All Sungai Buloh residents must wise up to their choice. Khairy is part of the problem and not the solution. Do not be distracted by his capable handling of Covid-19. Harapan equally has the calibre and personnel to handle the job.

It’s too bad that Khairy represents Umno/BN. We want all races to be treated with equal respect and provided equal opportunities. All marginalised needs require assistance and help from the government and not just a single race.

Race-based parties and religious-based parties are the main problems in the country. Be wise. Vote wisely for your children's future.

Cogito Ergo Sum: Khairy, you said it so well. Umno is a party for rural areas and not an urban one. Urban folk cannot be taken for a ride.

What you are saying is that you can’t fool the urbanites. But you can fool the rural folk. Umno/BN’s rhetoric will not work with the urban electorate.

They dissect and look at your leadership as well as your party’s track record. In short, your party stole the people’s mandate and your president was jailed for stealing from the people. How can you counter that? It would be a double blow to you personally and the party should you lose this one.

Racial rhetoric will not work here. Everyone has suffered equally after your coalition started administering this nation. The massive scandals being uncovered even after your Umno/BN stole the mandate is testimony that corruption is part of Umno/BN’s modus operandi.

Why would anyone give you their vote?
