Disability issues and policy: power not pity

Host: Daryl

Guests: Yeong Moh Foong & Murugeswaran Veerasamy

The disabled community in Malaysia has been an overlooked community in Malaysia for a long time. Their plights often go unnoticed and they would have to help themselves due to a lack of support. However, even with all the struggles that they face, members of the community remain proud of themselves.

For this episode of Youthphoria, we spoke with Yeong Moh Foong of United Voice and Murugeswaran Veerasamy of Damai Disabled Person Association Malaysia on ableism, the differences between disabilities and what the public can do to help improve the rights of the disabled community.

Yeong Moh Foong is the current Lead Coordinator of United Voice, a Self-advocacy Society of Persons with Learning Disabilities. She is a senior Job Coach trainer under Job Coach Network Malaysia (a unit set up under Jabatan Pembangunan OKU, JKM Malaysia) and has conducted many trainings and TOT (Training of Trainers) for participants from Malaysia.

Whereas as a wheelchair user himself, Murugeswaran has been leading a rights-based advocacy movement that has brought positive changes in the landscapes of public transportation, aviation, universal designs and more to the OKU Community of Malaysia.

The Women Empowerment Conference

We believe that the persistent issue of male-dominated industries has been a topic that has not been explored and discussed fully within the Malaysian tertiary education circle, and we want to do our part to challenge the status quo.

The Women Empowerment Conference will be a hybrid event that highlights the stories of women in male-dominated work industries through sharing sessions from a panel of speakers. The panel of speakers consists of three women with different backgrounds, who will share their unique thoughts and experiences about this important matter. This event is held and organized by the Sunway University Student Council.

The objective of this event is to highlight the existence of gender inequality in certain industries, to share advice and real experiences from successful women to overcome the challenges of gender inequality in the workplace, and to inspire young women to thrive in any industry, against all the potential struggles and challenges.

Event Timing: June 24th, 3:00PM - 4:30 PM

Event Venue: JC3. Sunway University // Zoom (Virtual)
